For a message start event, it would be expected that Camunda can no longer correlate the message, see Message Events | docs.camunda.org.
However, I’m assuming you’re not talking about a message start event but some intermediate catch event.
I suppose we’ll need more info to answer this:
- What does the relevant part of your BPMN model look like? It may also be a race condition related to the setting of async continuations.
- What does the Camunda Cockpit show? Are old deployments and their process instances still there?
- If not, what type of database are you using? I’d only expect your described behavior for an in-memory database.
- How exactly did you trigger the sending of the message?
