For a message start event, it would be expected that Camunda can no longer correlate the message, see Message Events | docs.camunda.org.

However, I’m assuming you’re not talking about a message start event but some intermediate catch event.

I suppose we’ll need more info to answer this:

  1. What does the relevant part of your BPMN model look like? It may also be a race condition related to the setting of async continuations.
  2. What does the Camunda Cockpit show? Are old deployments and their process instances still there?
  3. If not, what type of database are you using? I’d only expect your described behavior for an in-memory database.
  4. How exactly did you trigger the sending of the message?
