SME: Unsupported icons for buttons

When I use the SME to add an icon to a button, I get an inline search for icons, which is really great!
However, if I select a “wrong” icon, I am told by the SME that “The selected icon is of theme “outlined” which is not supported in forms.”

That begs two questions:

  • Why are “outlined” icons not supported?
  • Why are these icons even offered at all in the inline search when they cannot actually be selected. It feels like the SME is pulling my leg here.

I understand that the current situation is a bit frustrating but I believe we have taken a step in the right direction. The Form Engine has only ever supported icons with the filled theme so in this respect, nothing has changed. Compared to modeling Forms using the UI Designer, the Form Modeling Module in the SME now has:

  • An item picker
  • A warning for the user if an unsupported them is chosen
  • A helper text under the icon picker which tells the user that icons with “custom” and “outlined” themes are not supported

I hope that all icon themes will be supported by the Form Engine in the near future (as they are in the Overview Engine) so that there are no-longer any issues.

UPDATE for 2023.06

This has now been addressed with the 2023.06 release. Outlined icons are now supported and may be selected using the icon picker in the Form Modeling Module
