Just filled in a quick survey which went unoticed until now.
Have seen it by accident in the flood of jira messages.
Honestly is just mentioning people in JIRA the best way to collect information? We have so many great communication tools enforcing a higher recipient awareness (direct mails, discourse, …).
I get up to hundred of JIRA mails a day - so this way for me is very close to a guarantee that it goes unnoticed, since all those mails are from jiramailer@mgm-tp.com.
I agree.
Important topics should not be highlighted using JIRA only.
There are also up to hundreds of mails from JIRA coming my way every day that I have to go through just to make sure not to miss anything important. That cannot be the optimal solution. It feels like a big waste of time.
Maybe the generated JIRA mails could at least be customized in a way that allows us to filter them effectively from those that are less important.
Before we introduced this survey approach in JIRA, we tried by regular emails - please believe me that feedback flow there was not good and tracking and follow up in a team was worse.
I deal with the JIRA flood by filtering for emails, which contain my name.
This group of JIRA messages is much smaller has (for me) the same level of quality, relevance and importance as regular emails.
How about this approach?
Since no one responded so far, let me add more to this perspective:
Surveys are of certain importance and they are bound to deadlines, sometimes urgent.
But there are also other important processes handled in JIRA.
Requirements are analyzed, bugs are investigated and patch releases are negotiated based on them.
We rely on tight communication in JIRA for all these cases.
And we address individual people to enable filtering for personally addressed messages.
One could also create an rss feed from a jira search. Since the surveys are tagged they can be put into a jira search and this can be exported via rss. However unfortunately my old outlook 2010 is unable to process this rss feed from jira (see JIRA RSS feed is broken on MS Outlook 2007-2010 | Jira | Atlassian Documentation). So one would have to use another rss reader. Note that the search for the survey tag in jira is currently broken for me. I already informed Tuan, who will work to fix it.
The question can actually link to a Jira ticket which then contains all the details - so there is no need to have duplicate information in Jira and in Discourse
The main benefits that I see are:
Popular polls become more visible
In addition to just answering a multiple choice question, I can also explain my opinion in a comment. Comments can be upvoted, so valuable opinions become more visible
discourse has a nice scheme of notifying me about news without spamming me
there might be ways to be clever enought o no tmiss the JIRA messages to not miss.
But I really apreciate to use methods which make the task at hand easy and hard to do the wrong thing - hence a method to create a real survey where I have to answer the question might give the A12 team a more reliable feedback.
